Nestled along First Street, in between Pierce and McKinley, lies a new way to experience culture for ASU downtown students. Directly across the street from the Cronkite building is La Flor de Calabaza, Pomo Pizzeria Napoletana and The Turf Irish Pub.
La Flor de Calabaza, formally known as Squash Blossom, is a Latin Lounge. Their cuisine consists of Latin American, Mexican and Tapas Bars. La Flor de Calabaza also hosts karaoke, live music, and Salsa & Meringue nights.
Pomo Pizzeria is an award-winning pizzeria. It has been featured in the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix New Times. According to their Facebook page, their claim to fame is their “true authentic Neapolitan pizza.” Pomo is easy to spot, look for the cute scooters outside the restaurant.
“I’m from California where it’s all the same- fast food, American chains. I think it’s really cool to go to an actual pizza place that’s not a Little Caesars,” said ASU student, Victoria Tanner.
The Turf is fun Irish Pub that welcomes college students. They have comedy nights, live music, and of course, sports viewings. They offer a variety of food options and over 100 whiskeys and 12 rotating beer taps. Craft beer, good food and even a growler service for those on the go!
All of these restaurants are within walking distance of the ASU downtown campus and offer a bit more variety and culture to Phoenix.
